Bill Nelson is the current NASA Administrator and a former U.S. senator with a long-standing commitment to space exploration and science policy. Before leading NASA, Nelson had a distinguished career in public service, including three terms as a U.S. senator representing Florida, where he was a staunch advocate for the space program, supporting various initiatives aimed at expanding U.S. leadership in space. In 1986, Nelson became one of the few sitting members of Congress to travel to space when he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia as a payload specialist on the STS-61-C mission.
